Mech Turret

Hi guys,

Been following a tutorial here and this is what I have so far.
(it's just a simple occlusion render)
user added image

Left to do:
-Details (bolts, screws)
-Attach the weapons properly
-Add cables for hydrolics (the smaller guns don't have these yet)
-UV map
-Texture

Quick question.. how would I go about UV mapping this? There are so many parts, I'm afraid I will lose track of which UV belongs to which part of the model.. Any tips?

There are not really that many parts to UV, when you have done the modelling just delete one half and UV the half that remains. One part to UV at a time and add a checker box shader as you go to see witch ones you have done. When you have done it you will wonder what all the fuss was about.................dave

Alright thanks Dave.
So for example, I isolate one of the weapons and UV map 3x? 1x planar X(for the sides), 1x planar Y for the top/bottom and 1x planar Z for the front/back?

I use the bt-autoUnwrapUVTool that was in the bonus tools to help speed up UVing..............dave

Adding more and more details.. metals/rust etc
Also put the turret in a nice scene.
The idea is that the camera(person's point of view) will walk past, seeing the turret thinking it's been destroyed, but once you get close the turret will activate, rotate upwards and look towards you. The animation is already done btw.

I just can't really same to make it realistic.. I know I'm missing the specular map, still have to create that one. But any other tips?

Hey,

You ought to UV map the geometry to make the textures work. I would also lose the sharp edges. You can do this by adding a 'bevel' on the corners. I don't do modelling but this is probably in the mesh menu or maybe edit mesh menu... who knows any more.

Keep at it!
