Default Mesh as bones?

Hey people,

Back when I still used 3d studio max I was able to create a chain of poly boxs, link them all together then add IK to the actual mesh itself, Is this possible in Maya or do you have to use the bones for all ik animating?

hmm, I'm not sure about that one. I've always just used bones.
