Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Sword model

Testing some materials out for a sword I'm modeling for a friend. The sword is for a much bigger project. Just need some comments on it if you don't mind.

Sorry for not showing the whole sword, I havent finnished the whole thing yet.

I like it man, very realistic rendering, and nice looking sword. I think the spec could come down a bit on the handle but that could be just me.

BRUTICUS, Thanks for the comment! I will do a few renders with different spec values, and see if they look better.

magicsy, thanks for the kind words! I used a customized chrome shader for the hand guard, and the blade, and I used a ramp for the specular. The lighting was the hardest thing. I went through many HDRI's to find the best lighting.

concorddawned, thanks for the comment! Because of the angle of the render, the edge of the blade is not showing up very well, but rest assuerd, the blade is extremely sharp.

Great work THX1138. It looks really cool. The handle looks a little long to me but I guess that that is the style of sword.

Also, I am sure that it has nothing to do with the model, but it kind of looks like the hilt is missing some faces as the shadow seems to continue without being reflected at the points I have marked. What's going on?

Arran, I think that's just the plane it's put on that's reflected in the metal. Lowering the reflectivity a bit might be a way to fix that...

Thanks again for the comments!

arran, The chrome shader being used on the sword model is highly reflective, and even though I have a high reflection blurr on it, the hand guard is still catching the color off the groundplane. I will turn down the reflectivity just a tiny bit, and see if it helps to cut down color It's catching from the ground plane.

Alot of the mediaeval swords were either dull in appearance, or shiny and beautiful. I picked shiny and beautiful.

The long handle is intentional. The handle had to be long because the blades were heavy, and the knights had to hold them with both hands. Here is a few pics of some actual midiaeval swords.

Here is another render to see the blade in better light. I still have a bit more work yet to do on the sword itself, and I just might shorten the handle a little.

It's looking really cool THX1138 and I think I prefer the darker colour of the stone in the hilt. Any chance we can see the whole sword? Keep it up mate!

Thanks for the comment arron! I'm basicly finnished with the sword. Sorry about the appearance of the stone in that last render. I'm working on a better rubie texture for the next render. I'm also working on a convincing gold texture that I hope to use to decorate the hand guard.

You will get to see the whole sword in the next render I post along with a wire.

Update.

It's been a while since my last update on this. Been working on the materials for the gold trim around the hand guard and especially the hand grip.

it looks very good, the only thing I can comment on is the diamond, most diamonds are cut most complexly then that.

but that really is great, thx

Heh, that diamond is supposd to be a black Ruby with a red specular. Been working on it's texture for a while . I took off the origional shader for that render to make a better one. I'm almost finnished with it, and the finnished Ruby will be more round and less like a diamond. The gold texture; however, has been kicking my a$$ as I'm still tweaking it.

A big Thanks to you for the comment, hope to show the finnished version soon! user added image
