Backdrop/Sketch Layout/Template

Is there any way in Maya 5 to add a picture as the background in the views, so I can model my model to the exact curves and angles of the picture? Like taking a picture of a gun, putting it as the background in the side view, and creating a polygon and moving the vertexes to the points of the gun.
