any ideas why its doing this would be nice

Hmm ..it opened fine on my pc , I'm running Maya 2008 at the moment but I saved it as an .ma file if you want to try it, just open up the file in a text editors and change the 2008 to your version of Maya and then it should open.

it still doesnt work, just another crash. i reinstalled maya and still same issue, i can start a new one and it works fine. but i have a feeling theres to much overhead (history) so if someone could be so kind and delete the history for me and save it again that would be awesome!

edit: well i found a version in the temp folder, which is not to far off from where i was. but the odd thing is, when i move this one vertex point it will crash, and on the smooth version there a weired bump, i have no idea why it bumps up or at all. any ideas?

Select the geometry and go to the normals option and select conform. Dont know if this will work but the area there looks like the normals may be facing the other way.

well nothing solved the problem, i tried to on 2 computers with 8.5 and it crashs, even reinstalled a few times. also all my other projects are getting these errors. i really dont get it. so i went ahead and got 2008 and it works without errors, and overall looks like a patched up 8.5 so i'm never going back to 8.5 again.

its either 7 or 2008 for me. this one i'll just never figure out.
