Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

thanks dave. there are quite a few camouflage schemes that i can choose from. in the early stages of the war they only used a fixed set of colors but as the war progressed and supply lines were cut, they started using anything that was available and kind of matched the original colors.

i was thinking of using material_x. with that i can create the dull powdery look but still with get a bit of metallic shine. what do you think?

Mental ray madness

I am so close to shoving something thru this screen user added image

I have started with the bump map for one of my materials. Each time I change the bumpmap file texture I have to restart Maya to get that texture to take affect. Hitting the reload button reloads the texture but for the life of me I can't figure out why mental ray is not picking it up. It is almost as if mental ray is caching render info somewhere and just merrily ignoring the new texture. I have tried breaking the bump connection and reattaching it. I've turned off everything that looks remotely like geometry caching in the mental ray render optimization settings but nothing, nada, zip.

Any ideas?

Try using first a jpeg thats the safest then a tiff, or drop down to 16bit

I have figured out what is causing it but I don't know how to get around it though. Due to hardware limitations I have to limit the display smoothing level to 1 and override the render smoothing level to 2 on my geometry.
If I use the Maya default of display smooth level 2 and have the "Use preview level for rendering" set, then all works without a hitch.
When I set the display level to 1, have the "Use preview.." unset and the render division level manually set to 2, then it does not take affect.

Unfortunately not user added image
What I'll do is to set the smooth level to the default settings when working with a piece and set it back the custom settings when done.
