Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

Weird dark value on my mesh

Hello SimpleMaya community,

I have a question regarding my mesh. Everytime I use the "Append to Polygon Tool" to connect 2 edges but afterwards the mesh gets a weird dark shadow or s.th like that.

For helping you to understand the problem I also made a screenshot.

I hope u can help me

Check the Normals they might be flipped. Also I have noticed that if you are using the append poly tool to close up a lot of faces its best to take the very last hole and select the edges and then use the fill hole tool rather than the append poly and you avoid problems with the normals.

Hope that makes sense

The normals are not flipped and the Fill Hole Tool dont work.

Here is the result of it :/

Those new edges by default have soft normals, which you can harden by selecting the edge and Normals > Harden edge.

The fill hole you just did will require adding the missing edges with your split poly tool.

I would never use the fill hole tool. The append polygon tool expects you to click on the edges CLOCKWISE. If you just click on the other edge, the normals may be flipped, or if you go counter-clockwise, the normal will always be flipped. That's why there are little arrows on the edges when you use the append polygon tool. It's telling you which direction to build the polygon.

I used to think the fill hole was a bit rubbish but then I realized that you can use it to change the flow of a complicated mesh (delete the part you need to change then fill and cut new edges)quicker than using the normal tools..............dave

I agree... fill hole is handy. Gives you a clean slate to throw down some edges. I also find it handy for small holes with just one or two extra edges to add. It's better than bridge, cause you don't have to do any merging after. I don't know if there is a faster way to close small holes.
