for hills, just do the first technique I listed. Use a Nurbs Plane, select the CV's and move them.

Tree- depends what you want: super-detailed or just a plain "tree"

Use the built in paint effects for a tree, its the easiest way.

yeah, GSter is right. But, if you want super-detailed then... well, you;re in for a lot of work.

hmm well then umm what is CV casue im just learning and i dont know much

CV = Contol Vertex, right click over the nurbs plane and the options comes up, click it then the control vertex can be selected and moved.

As for scenery heres an example of a displacement map using maya's built in "mountian" texture that I did via tutorial, heres the link

gster i tried to make those moutians but i couldent get it to work i can get the hypershading part right, i dont think, it will let me
