This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

tsunami wave in MAYA

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone would know a good tutorial or the best way to create a tsunami wave in MAYA...

I am looking to make something like what was in the new posiedon movie..you know with the foam and wave curling ..
I need it to look very real...But I am not sure the best way to go about creating it....

I am thinking of modeling the wave shape and adding an ocean shader to it....and then particles...

Should work...Ill post my results if they turn out any good..

Why dont you create a default ocean (in the fluid effects tab) then create a wave (again the fluids tab) and make it really large?? Would that not work?

Thought there was one, I'm sure there was one when I looked the other day (as it thought "Oh thats good if I want to create a big wave") I'll have a look when I get home late.

All right I got it...

First go buy "Learning Maya 7, Maya Unlimited Features." It has a great ocean creation walk through. Then I sat down and tried to make a tidal wave for ya...this is what I came up with.

The Ocean was done under the Fluid Effects>Create Ocean, and then the settings were just adjust for wave height, frequency, wind speeds, foam, color, etc.

I am sure you can work with a bunch of the settings, because there are a million of them, to make it just what you want. I did all this in like 20 minutes, so if you really take the time I am sure you can get it to look real nice. I didnt try to animate it but I am sure you can just set the ocean to be normal (attachment 1) and then set a time point to make the wave (attachment 2)...

Enjoy.

still working on it but I found a great reference image...
This is the wave from the movie...I am trying to get something similar....

they talk a bit about it and how they did the cg effects HERE

so amazing..The fluid effects are totally beyond me in this film...They made new sofware for the fluid to interact naturally with the ship etc....100 people to make it..Then they needed new hardware just to run it....Nothing was fast enough...

Ya I was trying to make something like that for ya...but the problem I was having was that I couldnt make it still before and after the wave. I could make a huge wave, but it had a smaller huge wave in front of it.

I am not sure if it is possible, but you could try to have 1 small ocean that has the huge wave, and another ocean that is calm seas, overlay the two and get that effect. As for the wave breaking over itself, that is another huge problem, I am not even sure if the animation for the ocean can even do that in maya...
