Set a keyframe for RATE at the time you want them to start, then to make them:

Stop slowly: Key the rate back to "0".
Stop quickly: Key the rate back to "0", and in the graph editor, make sure the curves are set to steppeduser added image

That wprked but now there is another problem, I goto the Hardwere Render Buffer and render it. When i play it back there is only a fraction of the particles compared to the one I was expecting

No problem.

If you want a BURST of particles at the start, or over the length of your keyframes, just increase the RATE for the first keyframe.

See my Maya 4.5 scene file for example:

I have managed that bit and happy with the animation, now I am having strange problems with the rendering. When I do a softwere or hardwere render all I see is black. I know my particles are white but I still can't see them.

Do you know how to solve this problem?

Im still a noob when it comes to rendering, a bit too abstract for my liking.

He's talking about an option in the attributes of your particles. Select your particles, then choose Windows>Attribute Editor. Under one of the sections you will see a dropdown list with things like "cloud" and "sprite." You need to select the kind of particle rendering you want here. Different selections obviously will give different results when rendered. The default particles do not render at all I believe, so you almost always have to change this to something.

It was set to MultiStreak, I have changed it to Points ect but I seams to have no effect to the rendering. Have a look at pic.

P.S. The strange thing is, in the Hardwere Render Buffer, when I click 'Test Render' the picture looks fine but when I goto render sequence ... well, you can see the results.

hmmm...

Just shooting in the dark here, do you have depth-sort turned on by chance?
or not?

Also, what it your cameras clipping values set to?

Sorry... not sure on this one...
