Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 2
This course will look in the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. It's aimed at people that have some modeling experience in Maya but are having trouble with complex objects.

Modeling a screw

Hey everyone...I'm totally new to Maya. I'm using it for a project at school...right now, I need to figure out the best way to create a screw. Does anybody have any tips? Thanks.

Let me rephrase the question...I've already tried using the CV curve tool, but it doesn't give me the shape I want. I want more of a slanted spiral....can anyone at least tell me how to do that?

Create a cylinder.

Scale every other vertical edge out to make a star like shape.

Scale all the horizontal edges to make it taper down to a point.

Rotate all the horizontal edges one at a time (add more degrees each time to the rotation) to create the slant.

I think that should work. I haven't tried it myself actually. But it sounds accurate.

...and that is how I saved the world.

You should be able to acheive it by simply making a "nail with side-fins" then applying a twist modifier, thus the side fins become the thread around the screw.

Basically do what Dockode said, but instead of adding in the rotations manually you should use the twist modifyer to do this instead.
