Dissapearing Polygons

Hey, this is the forst time ive had this happen to me. It happened when i tried to make the border edges thicker, im not sure if thats what caused it, because i then restored the defaults and it still happened.
As soon is a try to extrude a border edge and move the edge, some of the polys just disapear, but the mesh stays.
Ive tried for a while, but i cant find out why, it was fine until the guy in the car tutorial showed me how to make border edges thicker.
Heres a picture to show you what i mean.

I don't know why this happens, but it often happens to me when I extract parts of my geometry. thankfully it's an easy fix. you can do it one of two ways: one select the object that your having problems with and right click-- go to the bottom of the menu and select matterials, then re-connected the object to your defalt lambert. or , two, open your hypershade select the object with the problem and then right mouse select the default lambert in your hypershade and selcet assign material to selection. and there you go problem all fixed.
