Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Texturing help for newbie

I created my first model in Maya after looking at the Medieval challenge examples. Since I'm a complete Maya newbie I dont know how to apply textures to the sword. =//

How do I apply textures to the seperate areas of the sword? Like metal for the hilt and leather for the handle?

Thanks,

Is this a polygon or nurbs model... with polygons you can automatic mapping under edit polygons -> texture -> automatic mapping

you can than edit the UV of the texture in UV texture editor
Window->UV texture edi...

If this is a nurbs model I probably would project a 3d texture to the sword.. Correct me if i'm wrong. I do more poly model than anything else.

Hey thanks for the quick reply!

Its created in Polys. I tried the edit polygons >> auto texture mapping, but it didn;t seem to do anything.

I'll check out those tutorials...

WOW, TXS kev. I plan on buying points when the new tuts. are released.

here are two shots of what to do.
The image was put together in about 5 minutes

I built sword from poly's extrude. than I selected the faces of the metal part and extracted so I can apply a shader to it.

the handle: I selected the fron faces and planar mapped them. This sometimes works far better then automatic mapping. You can get quick resuts this way.

I extracted the faces but it replicated the entire selected face, I chose extract from the Polygon menu, is this the correct method?

first select the faces of you want to extract.

under Edit Polygons menu got to extract and click on the Window to the right.

reset setting and extract. You should now have two pieces. the sword and handle.
