Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

Realism - undseth

I'm thinking of modeling some application. I know a little about texturing and a little about the use of mental ray, so I think I can contribute with something here in addition to the monthly challenge.

Hmmm. I have to think about this a little, but those rhino gallery pics I've seen earlier on the web, has always given me loads of inspiration.

Here's a couple of ideas;
A dvd player, custom designed.
A mobile phone, custom designed off course (I never like to copy)

Ah, those are both great ideas undseth! I think if you design a mobile phone, that is different from all the rest, and really cool and realistic looking, it would be great. But this challenge isnt for best model... so maybe a custom dvd player would be your best bet user added image.

Oh, yes your're probably right! I'll do a stereo, and make an effort to make it realistic looking.

I have sketched out an idea and will do a drawing right away.

Making a good brushed metallic surface will be a challenge.

Ok here it goes...

Here's a sketch.

I'll start to refine it and start modeling right away.

Hmmm

Sub-d looks like fun! Have to convert to polys later, for use with mental ray.

hmmm

The sub-d thing is a little tricky. I am having troubles making smaller holes in the sub-d mesh.

can you boolean subtract them? Like group a bunch of small pegs (cylinders) that you want to be the shape of the holes, then move them into the object and boolean. I dont know, just wondering. Its really coming along.. gj undseth user added image.

I wonder, have I misunderstood this competition? Are the models supposed to be low poly or something?
