This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

Nov/Dec - Character - Sci-fi - Nataliia - Noobie

With two months, I should be able to finish this. :bgreen:

Anyway... Concept:
* Gandalf as Dr Who, with the usual props (K9, TARDIS, dalek....whatever else I can throw in there). He will, of course, be the Third Doctor, as played by Tom Baker.

Managed to get some heavy modelling time in (whilst waiting for a repairman) so....here's the first prop: a Dalek! I'll probably leave Gandalf until last while I research how to do a decent head user added image

WIP shots of the dalek...

Hey good job so far! But excuse my ignorance, what is a dalek?

Oh no, not K9, i hated him :-). Just like scrappy doo.

The dalek is looking great though. Looking forward to seeing it with the real textures.

I had not planned to make many, if any, changes to the dalek. What specifically does he need? The one I based him off of was solid black with silver accents. I made him a bit more beat up as...well...Dr. Gandalf Who can really wreak some havok. user added image

One thing I notice is that it looks almost like it was made for game art. If that's not the case, you might want to try smoothing some of his more round parts out.

Oki dokie. Will try some smoothing and see about lightening up on the bump map a bit, maybe? Hopefully that will help. I also used some rather odd lights (about as cheap as Dr Who lights, in fact) and I will re-render with different, *normal* lights and a smoother body user added image

Thanks!

Going from memory i only recall the colors being fairly solid. Your pic looks like you have some procedural plugged in there. . There wasn't so much detail in the main body.

Fantastic idea Natalia, and a really good start, D)

I'm a huge Dr Who fan, and look forward to seeing what you do with this. Tom Baker was my favourite, but John Pertwee reminds me more of Gandalf user added image

Yeah, I changed the main body color, but the style will remain as this is an older model than the one pictured user added image More in line with this one: https://www.physics.mun.ca/~sps/serials/k.jpg which is a "First Doctor" era dalek. A bit old to be messing about with the Fourth Doctor, but anything is possible user added image

As for the coloring, I did make some changes and think it looks better. I also followed Mike's suggestion of smoothing it a bit, making it a tad more roundy without eliminating the whole "I found these bits in a rubbish bin...we have a critter!" look.

Cool stuff. user added image I'd say the rim around the botom edge and the dome on top could use some smoothing.
