Beer glass scene creation
This course contains a little bit of everything with modeling, UVing, texturing and dynamics in Maya, as well as compositing multilayered EXR's in Photoshop.

Cheers for your comments. I see what your saying jhubbard, as for now I am doing it this way to put it in my showreel. Im going to get the lighting sorted as at the moment it is unrealistly bright and has naff shadows so that's one of the reasons it looks like a cartoon.

Sometime in the future I will ''muck it up'' and make it a bit more weathered. Probably the last two posts before it goes into the Finished Work post will be making the lighting a bit better to compliment the model.

I like your attitude! If your machine can handle it I don't see any problems with a high poly count to make a model look good. With proper lighting your ship will look spot on.

Nice one,

Mat.

A very nice and superbly detailed piece.

It'd be great to see it sailing through some water for your showreel user added image

So guys it looks like I might be needing your help, all of the texturing is done and now all that I need is to make the lighting look a little more realistic.

I have had a look at the tutorials on this site but they don't seams to fit my needs.

What would you suggest?

Think a nice global illumination via a HDRI image would look good, maybe a sunset style??

I have never even played with HDRI so I wouldn't even know where to start. Lighting and rendering are all a bit alien to me as I am mainly a modeller.

But it's all part of the learning process.

Well the tutorial looks great but I am having a few problems with it.

For one when he says goto Lighting/Shading ---> Asign new material ---> Dgs_material

Where did he get that from? I don't have that option.

Is it a plug-in that you have to download before you can use it.

Hey Tim! Ship looks great! I remember back when all you had was a handfull of polys and a dream ... well played!

Dgs is a Mental Ray node which you can find under MATERIALS in the Hypershade menu. Just make sure you have CREATE MENTAL RAY NODES or CREATE ALL NODES selected otherwise you won't see it.
