IK Problems

I'm creating a bear for an animation project. I have 3 of the legs working properly but when I try to animate the final front leg somewhere between the back position and the front position the leg rotates 90 degrees for a frame or two. The leg is controlled by an IK handle. How do I set it up so that there is no rotation? I don't know if this is important, but while I'm animating I'm doing it from the side view so that the legs only go back and forth and not side to side. I'm supposed to have the first shot of my animation done by tomorrow early afternoon so any help would be great- thanks in advance!

even though its abit late, instead of going into side view and animating or whatever from there why dont you just lock the direction its going in soo it cannot move what soo ever ...

by the way how did it go?
