Not bad, though I think the fractal backdrop is taking away from the image and it would probably look better in black & white.

That's great! well done user added image
just one small thing I noticed - the hands are too short. try to stand in this pose and see how far down your hands reach.

What I meant about the background is that I'm very "aware" of what it is, I guess its also because there's so much of it and that there's no falloff so its not really accentuating him, you know.

As a wallpaper it fits, maybe have a bit more contrast between the dude and the backgorund, but as a portrait, its as Genny said a bit too wide.

Is that full HD res or is it scaled down, as it fits my monitor fine with quite a bit of rooms to spare?

its scaled down HD to fit my monitor, its much more suited to 1024x1024 i guess, next render will be smaller
EDIT: what should i do to the background then?

Try out some different colours, maybe just white? Give nice clean contrasts.

Have a look about for soem references.

As for the HD stuff, I run 1900 X 1200 so its got a bit of room to spare

You can keep the fractal if you're in love with it, you can keep it the at whatever resolution, its just that I think it looks flat and its really "in your face". This is what I meant about the fall off. I tried recreating your backdrop texture and main light source but added a few things to show you what I'm trying to say, you can add more lights to fill in some the darker areas if you want :x

You might want to fake some depth of field for it to create that contrast everybody was asking for. I PMed you with an example and I can post it here with your permission.
Also, don't worry about the wide screen. There's nothing in the background so one can simply cut it to fit a normal screen.
Benny

EDIT: Here it is then (photoshop practice for me)
