Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Well...thanks! user added image

First off, I started out with the bump map, which later provided the base for the colour and specular maps.

To start with, I created some kind of noise map which I used as the base layer.

For the bump map I created a layer filled with 50% gray and then went mad with the Dodge/Burn/Blur tools using a Wacom tablet.

There are several layers (all with a base of 50% gray) for major and minor details, as well as special features (like the 'sideburns').

All layers are set to Overlay, so only the painted details come through.

The UV template sits on top of all layers and is set to Screen mode with Opacity reduced to about 10-15%.

The bump map for the horns turned out to be the really tricky part...

WoW !

I like it alot !
As a 1st Head, it looks so perfect (well... since I like Monsters and stuff rather then Boring Humans..)
I would like to know what techniques you used for the modelling and of course for the COOL Texture (UV and stuff + the color)
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORKING !

Oh yes, my friend, that's a very true thing you said there!

Seems I'm back - with most of my data on the save side (for now).

Most of the applications are back in place, but it's still going to take some time untill I have my environment up and running the way I'm comfortable with.

I'm using a dual monitor setup, and for a numer of apps (including Maya, Photoshop, Vegas and InDesign), I have my own special layouts for all the windows and palettes, so...

Well, at least Maya rembemers the placement of the UI elements (lucky me)!

See ya later,

Yep, it's based on the tut by the hobbit guy, but I decided not to leave it as it was but to make something else out of it. So I came up with the horns and some other stuff.

Trouble is, it took me so long to get by with the model, I can't see him anymore... :p
