Regarding the cartoon dog tutorial

How does the guy select the purple dots along the white lines of the NURB sphere (I know, I sound like a total noob). You can hear him press a key on the keyboard and then several of the purple dots will be selected, even when his mouse wasn't over them. Anyone know what key it is? Thanks

I think he does it do he doesn't select the vertex dots that are on the other side of the polygon plane, if that helps explain it

lol, he right clicks and hold and moves the mouse to vertex.lol
