Weird "fire" gradient when I make a selection?

When I make a selection, either in NURBS or Polygons, all the area around will be affected for which I'm notified early...through a fire gradient in the surrounding geometry (fire I mean, yellow to red to black)...What mode have I activated again with my problematic keyboard??user added image
