Simple problem i can't fix!

I'm very new to Maya and ive got a problem that sould be really easy to fix!
What's happening is: when i try and select a vert, face or edge and i try and simply move it, it creates a new one and starts moving that! I've been using Maya 8.5 for a while and it's been fine- I must have pressed a keyboard shortcut and now it's freaking out on me! Please HEELLPPP!!!
