Maya 2020 fundamentals - modelling the real world
Get halfway through a model and find it's an unworkable mess? Can't add edge loops where you need them? Can't subdivide a mesh properly? If any of this sounds familiar check this course out.

How to model a muzzle brake?

So I'm working on this rifle here,

And I'm sort of clueless how to do a muzzle brake, this thing here,

I think I would add some edges vertically on it and then extrude those faces inwards and then delete faces and merge verts...??

Okay I through this together hope it helps....


STEP 1


create a cylinder with 20 divisions and extrude out the basic shape / volume...

STEP 2

Add edge loops for the ribs and extrude the faces inside the main ribs around the vent areas inward.

snap the vertices at the end back to the outer edge of the muzzle...and merge them

STEP 5.

add edge loops to tighten up the edges. Note that I extruded the main ribs (the horizontal ones around where the holes are) so that I got 4 side faces. I merged the rear verts back and deleted the extra edges similar to what we did to the front verts.

STEP 6.

using split polygon tool cut in where the vent will be. (turn off split at edges only).

You can also see I extruded the front edge out a small amount, then extruded in to the size of the bullet, the extruded back into the barrel.

STEP 7.

I deleted the faces on the outside of the barrel where the vent is.

Then using cut faces tool (with just the inner faces of the barrel selected) I added edges to match the front and back edges of the vent.

Then deleted the inner faces.

Then using bridge, fill hole, and split polygon I connected the outer hole edges to the inner hole edges.

finally, I added some edge loops to tighten thing up a bit.


NOTE. I only had to do this for the right side. When I had it all tweaked I just selected the inner and outer faces for the vent area and duplicated them and then just rotated them 90 degree for the top, left, and bottom. Then combined everything and merged the verts to close up the surface.

Here it is smoothed and rendered. It's not a perfect match but it's close and only took about 20 minutes of time.

Here is an example of how a small change can make a profound difference. I removed the edges I cut through the center of the vents and cut edge loops close to each end. To my eye it makes the vents more uniform and consistent with a machining process.

Although to first version seems a bit more like the reference image I like the second version more.

update: I tightened up a few more edges and added a blinn shader

It's a Maya 2010 .ma file that has been compressed using winrar.

If you would like the file let me know which version of maya you are using and I can save it for that version or I can just compress and post the .obj.
