Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

well there's no vote for lighting and rendering / scripting / dynamics tutorials. IMHO there's more than enough modelling tutes here on the site user added image

I wish I had more time after work and i would do some but it's really hard to find the time to do them.

Unhelpful I know, sorry user added image

Hey Alan,
I totally understand what you're saying. I wish that some of the people out there would explain how they do some of those extremely realistic, but painted, skin textures/shaders.

What does everyone think of a Renderman for Maya Tutorial?

Renderman is a good idea, but then you are limiting the supply of people who want it as there is only a free version for Maya 7, nothin else. and I can beleive anyone owns it as it costs thousands.

Its really good and I think maybe a rendering tute woudl be good, looking at SW/ HW/ metnal Ray etc...

Whatup R@nsid,

Actually, Renderman for Maya is not very expensive at all. Otherwise I wouldnt have bought it. The full blown Renderman 11 does costs thousands of dollars, but not RfM.

I find that it is the best solution for any type of tesselation, with the use of the Subdiv Scheme. Extremely smart those Pixar people. user added image

The tutorial would be more a less, here is what RfM can do well, and here's what it doesnt do well. Like the difference between fur rendering is absolutely ridiculous. It looks amazing in RfM!

Im not saying it would just be like a demonstration, it would be a lecture. Just the typical lighting type of lecture.

Anyway I was just asking if anybody was interested. Might start a poll on that one, when this one is over.

yes but then you need the person who is gonig to do the tute to have Rfm aswell. I only have the pro version at work so I couldn't do it.

When you start getting into specialist stuff like that you will limit your audience

Papal thats cool mate. I have been throught the DT renderman for Maya DVD and I must say its the fastest and most powerful render engine I have seen to date. Around 10x faster than Mental Ray. WOW!!!

Maybe its worth while then, but as I said your kinda restricting it to maya 7 users only as the 8.5 version is not out yet.

Ive got to agree with Alan's first post, I feel theres lots of modeling tutorials already on the site, theres lots of hard surface, organic, low poly etc etc.

I would personally like to see more advanced rigging, dyanmics, possible hard surface animation mixed with dynamics, say a car crash, explosion etc as these are a big part in TV, film and game work.

Or even a tutorial on photorealistic texturing and rendering using mental ray with the textures being generated from photos and the environment from a HDR/LDR image made from scratch and the object being compositied into a photograph, as ive not really seen many other sites offering a tutorial like that??

that's because it's a LOT of work user added image

you never know I may be able to shift myself into smoe sort of motivated state of mind to do it.

Maybe a combination tutorial where kurt can model it and I can texture it and render it... would that work?

The above with Alan and Kurt is good. It will let us see how to deal with it in a "kinda real world" setting. Alan being a TD for Framestore.

Alan did u write an article of 3D World in one of the latest issues. I am sure someone from framestore did or was quoated in an article recently?

If its a lot of work and its worth it in the end for the site and a personal goal of doing the tutorial then its got to be worth it in the end!

If you guys work together then it should be sweet.
