Ideas Please

I'd like to create a 3d simulation of a deck of cards being thrown into the air towards the camera. The cards will freeze in space, and a character will then pick one out of the air.

How would people go about doing this. Particles and instancing? dynamics? Any suggestionswould be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.
