Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Crits and comments wanter on human figure

Hi,

I'm almost there with my character I think. Happy with the face and arms, chest needs a bit more detail. Back needs work I think. Tried to maintain good edge flow. Face set up for animating, think I've got enough mouth loops, eyes should be OK done a quick test with clusters to close one lid, looked ok.

Was considering using bump maps for his ribs / inner chest muscles, rather than modeling - any thoughts on this?

Comments and crits wanted on how to improve. Going to be clothed from the waist down, so the legs are my next stage.

thanks again,

gubar.

I really like the edge flow of this one, you used a wire reference or did you just spend endless amount of time keeping it to quads?

Keep up the good work, I want to see it done. user added image

Thanks,

just been tweaking it a lot, spent quite a bit of time looking at other models too. Got one or two tris (in ear, and under arm, not really noticeable and they smooth out) and a 5 pointed poly in the face I need to get rid of.

Any thoughts on using bump maps for the ribs, or should I model them?

cheers,

gubar.

Well I would not bother with modeling, such fine detailing(unless he is starving ofcourse or if you have Zbrush) I recomend that you just paint it on the texture or as you say bump map it.

Here's an update. Not totally happy with the chest muscles, would appreciate opinions on this in particular. Also, there is a lot of geometry there; may cause painting weights issues. I could remove the geometry, and normal map them instead.

thanks,

gubar.

looks pretty good to me. I can't spot anything totally wrong at least.

Yeah agreed, he definitely needs a nipple or two!

DJ Blazer, thanks for the reply, but anything specific you'd like to critic in the model? Nothing totally wrong is a fairly non-specific comment.

cheers,

gubar
