How to create a Hole in nurbs?

Hi
Very simple question,
I have a nurb cube and i want to make a hole go thru it, how can i do that?

you can make a hole by using the boolean function. Or you can patch model the hole by dividing the cube into parts taking out a section and replacing it with a lofted cylider or something of the sort. the later is complicated and going into it further would probably confuse you till you learn patch modelling and modeling with nurbs

Mike's right. You'd probably be better off converting to poly first. If you want to stay with nurbs, you could try to project a curve on a surface using a nurbs circle, then trim.

dont scare him... the fact is, it takes more to get results from Nurbs than it does with poly's and sub D's. But, Nurbs have plenty of advantages that other modelling forms do not.

With nurbs, you surfaces are calculated with multiple points alloing them to curve and fold uniformly. Other surfaces can achieve similar results but dont have the inherent continuity of nurbs. Sub' Ds come close but are bound by polygons, sharing both there ease and inconsistancy. but damn, Dont put poky's and sub d's out of the mix. they've earned there stripes.

im drunk and tired and i'm starting to ramble... where was i... oh yeah..

Going with trim is one way. But, with Nurbs surfaces, Booleans and trims are one and the same. as a matter of fact i got so used to nurbs, i rarely use the boolean tool over the trim tool.

I didnt really mean to say 'dont scare him' in such an abrupt way. It's just rare that i see newbies interested in Nurbs anymore.


Hell man... learn everything... but take it one step at a time. Finish your nurbs buddy. since you already started it.

hehehe I think it was not a simple question after all user added image I appreciate the great help you guys give me!!!!

Iron tick: I thought Booleans was only for polygons?
I try it but it says that object is not a polygon....hmm?

Nitro / mike : If i convert the nurb into polys i will have a lot of mishaped flat triangles, does that will affect negatively when i texture it?

Also if i wanted to project a curve, where is that option located?

For the record, I'm learning on my own and i haven't got in depht on polys and nurbs maybe 40% I'm learning as i go user added image (thanks to a great forum and people that take a minute and help guys like me grow knowlegde and interest in this field)

When you convert NURBS to poly, select the option box. You'll see all the options for the coversion. You can set the conversion to output triangles or quads. Read up on the various options/paramters in the help files that come with Maya.

Project a curve is in the EditNURBS menu as are booleans for NURBS.

ok, now that im sober LOL under edit nurbs menu, you will see the boolean command also. this one is for nurbs. click it and select subtract click the cube first, hit enter and then click the cylinder.. hit enter one last time and viola.
