transferring objects from maya to Photoshop

i was watching the texture tutorial by Michael Mckinley, near the start of that video he mentions texture coordinates (UV coordinates.) how do you make that?

from there do you just move the file back and forth to maya and photoshop.

sorry if this is confusing, im not much of a computer wiz at this stuff.

thanks for your help

For mapping textures, U V W are used to indicate directions and positions instead of X Y and Z .... I'm not clear myself on why this is ... but it just is.
In Maya, and other 3D modelling software, you can export an image of your model layout. This is not an "object" but a plain bitmap image (JPG, TGA, GIF, ..) which you can open in your image editor, like Photoshop, and draw textures on. When finished, you can import it back in Maya by applying the image as a object texture/material.
I recently posted a few steps on how to do this in another thread:

You can find some more topics on this site by using the Search feature in the menu-bar. Search on UV,texture and photoshop. user added image
