Backface culling only for shaded view??

I am a Lightwave user and have been searching these forums to find a way of making drag selections in perspective shaded mode where i my drag selection, only selects visible polygons.

I have found that Backface culling is my answer, but only partially. In lighwave, if you select in wireframe, it selects right threw the object from backfaces to front faced polygons. If you change to a shaded view, it only selects faces which are visable, and not faces behind (like backface culling).

Can i have backface culling on in shaded mode and not in wireframe (and modes like where u see back to front).

To re-ittereate, can i have backface culling on in only shaded style modes? (and have it as a default maya setting)

To re-itterate again, can you select only what you can see.
