Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Hey arran, this is looking awesome man. Textures are looking good, dig the greenery on the walls, and the sheer scale of the whole thing is inspiring. Are you aiming for a barren or forest environment around the city? Personally I would go for green grass and bushes, maybe a few scattered trees, and patches of arid land masses.

Nicely coloured and textured arran.

I love the fact that you're covering every angle, pretty ambitious but it'll be worth it when it's done. I agree with vizion on the choice of environment, a lush green world would suit the buildings better. There's a lot of glass, no point in that unless there are views to enjoy!! What about having a waterfall over the edge of the cliff too?

Whichever way you go on the environment you've done a sterling job so far.

Take it easy,

Mat.

hey - thanks a lot for the comments happymat and vizion! user added image

Actually i have been planning to put this in a desert environment. I have already built a few cacti, a couple of jade trees and layed down a very simple texture on the ground. A lush environment would be cool, though, and I love the idea of a waterfall, though that is a bit beyond me at the moment...

thanks papalatistudios - yeah, you are right - I probably am shooting myself in the foot - I guess I wanted to keep this project fairly open ended. Due to my schedule, I really doubt that I will finish on time anyway. I just wanted to have a scene with lots of buildings in it.

Nothing to show at the moment. I have just been working on the ground plane and modelling the cliff face, which is looking kind of crappy. I have also been trying to texture one of my trees, which is not going so well. I had hoped to transfer the UVs from one leaf to the rest, but it doesn't seem to be working, so I may have to planar map each leaf seperately! There must be an easier way...?

Thanks thx1138 user added image. I am hoping to get as much done as possible by the deadline and then depending on how I feel about it, I will try to keep working on it. I am looking forward to working on something else though, cos at the moment my motivation for this project is pretty shot through.

Hey there arran,

maybe if you just concentrate on a single camera angle and get that just right for your entry you can always come back to the project after you've had a break. There's not long to go, keep at it.

Later,

Mat.

Thanks mat and papalatistudios - user added image

yeah I should probably listen to you maya pros - i'll try to stick to one main camera angle.

Still not much to show as I have been stuck at work. I have just been unwrapping uvs and applying textures.

Here is another small update . I have extended the landscape and applied a simple texture. I have also rebuilt the cliff face and added a few boulders. I haven't mapped the cliff face yet - the texture is just the ground texture stretching over it. This is probably fairly close to the final camera angle.
