Lattice Deformer Problem

I am trying to create a lattice deformer for an eyeball to make it a bit more cartoony and stop it from having to be a sphere, however I am running into an error:

Error: Wrong number of arguments on call to latticeAutoparent.

It is a basic polygon sphere, with a small section of a polygon sphere as the pupil, the pupil has the sphere as the parent, and the parent is contained in a group called LeftEyeGrp. Now when I try to create a lattice with 2x2x2 divisions, local mode off, and with center around selection, group base lattice and autoparent to selection all checked, then I get the above error, but I have no idea what it means.

(maya 8 btw)
