This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

First impressions:

1. Too much light.
2. Shadows are too sharp
3. Too clean environment (add some fog... even a tiny bit helps often for outdoor shots... and maybe even some DOF)
4. Bump maps could use some more resolution
5. The heart with the arrow decal looks like it's bumped outwards... shouldn't it be carved inwards?
6. The Stop-sign pole looks a bit too thick...

Don't get me wrong. I just listed some things I would change. This image has lots of potential to be a really nice one... Keep it up...

I want the light to simulate a strong morning sun

The shadows do not look too sharp to me but I will try to test a bigger light source

The wall and the heart indeed need to be bumped in and not out - dont know why it looks like it.

If you want the light to look like strong morning sun, I suggest making it less yellow. Strong sunlight tends to bleach the colors.
You may want to try a cool color of light combined with a warm shadow color. It usually works in paintings, may not give the same result in 3D... The way it is now looks more like afternoon. Just my opinion.

Also try introducing color variations in the wall rather than having solid color: greenish where some water may have accumulated in the past, closer to white where the paint has been scratched or simply bleached by many years in the sun, some rust stains from the pipe, etc.
I can tell you that one huge breakthrough I had in traditional arts was when I finally convinced myself that something I thought was a single color actually looked much better when other colors were added to it. Hope it makes sense. These are concepts from traditional arts, I am by no means a 3D expert.

But definitely know what you are talking about - it has been long since I painted in watercolors and used the purple like shadows to enhance my artwork.

SOme of what you suggest is indeed planned for that work - I will test the lights you suggested,

looking really good. the only thing that really bugs me is the stop sign has to much reflection on it.

Maybe , but when you think of it - they actually have to reflect the lights of the cars
