Nurb or Polly

I was scanning through the help files associated with maya, and some online tutorials, and I cant really find a reason, or definition, but when modeling which is preferable? Nurbs or Polys? Why would I use one over the other?

I have heard people talk down about one or the other, but never figured out why.. or which one is preffered for certian applications over another...

Sorry for the generic question...

They both have different unique properties one might want when modelling certain things. Nurbs are great for modelling smooth objects, however you can remap polys. Texturing polys is much easier in my opinion.
