Extrude Edge separating

When i extrude some edges, they don't stay together...so i have to go and merge all the edges before i smooth or convert to sub-d otherwise i get creases and it doesnt smooth properly.

I noticed in the tutorials they never have to merge the edges to get the correct results...is this some setting i need to change or is it just something i have to deal with?

i'm not sure if the keep faces together option would help or not...

Check the outliner or hypergraph to verify if there is anything in the scene.
