hiding portions of geometry

Is there a way to hide a portion of an object? I'd love to be able to select a few polys and hide them while I work under them. Any way to do this?
thanks

If they are separate pieces of geometry you can select everything you don't want and use Display>Hide Selected.
To bring it back - Display>Show Last Hidden...
You may also want to use layers...

When in doubt, delete history and freeze transformations.

you can select the faces that you want to work on and then go to the viewport menu and select show>isolate selected>view selected.

I'm looking for a way to hide portions of an object. As in how to hide a few polys at a time.

That sounds like what I am looking for. Where is the "viewport window"? I am having trouble finding the isolate selection option.
thanks

the viewport is the window that you're working in - just look at the top of the perspective window and you will see a small menu with about 5 options.
