Mars and Maya

Hi all,
I'm just about to start creating some landscapes of Mars using hight maps from the USGS guys.
There's a whole bunch of Mars terrains available for down load, but has anyone tried to create landscapes using hight/elevation maps? I can do it no probs using Bryce than export the terrain as obj but is there a way to do it ion Maya?

Displacement maps will not work as it would displace the wrong information
Black for low points and white for high points

Well thank you all for the tips and links guys. Though Im having trouble converting the displacement to polys, doesnt seem to have an effect, but the New Mars MOLA files are fab. As soon as I figure out the prob I'll colour up and post some images. Once again cheers all
