Problems with Importing and Scaling

My friends and I are working on a really sweet animation project. They modeled and rigged some characters and props; I was in charge of the office setting they're supposed to go in. When I imported though, the scale was off by a ratio of about 3 or 4. My scaling tool works poorly; any tips on how to improve?

Group everything in the scene you want to scale and then scale the group. If you just select the individual objects / separate groups it will scale around their associated pivots.
