CV Editing problems in MAYA 8

I'm using Maya 8 on MacOSX 10.4.8, and have been experiencing numerous bugs, for example: when I create a NURBS shape (say a sphere), and try to enter "Control Vertex" mode, I get the following error message: "Warning: Edit UV Mode is not enabled on nurbsSphere1. UVs will not be selectable." Also, only two CVs show up, and they are on the far end of the sphere. Is there some property of the object that must be changed to correct this problem, and if so, what? Thank you for your help.

I reinstalled Maya, and it still didn't work. However, it did fix a couple other problems (this version seems very buggy, probably because it's so new.) The thing is, during installation, it will give a registryPkg error repeatedly, and bring up the console. However the program still installed, and am able to use it, just with all these bugs... anyone know when there will be an update/patch for maya 8?
