Rendering a Maya Project

i have finished making a small movie in Maya and when i try to render the whole thing i get a .tep file. What am i doing wrong. i want to get a file that windows media player can read like an avi. in the settings i have file type set to avi. but it dosent come out that way. can someway give me exact direction on how to do it the right way

set the file type to something like .tiff
then once rendered open the sequence in fcheck and go to file > save as movie

have a look in the "how to render a movie" sticky thread, its a slightly dated now but it will show you what the steps are.

Sorry but what is fcheck and how do i get to it?

go to file > open sequence and pick the first picture in your render, and it should open with fcheck (or i think it will on a pc)
