Maya for 3D Printing - Rapid Prototyping
In this course we're going to look at something a little different, creating technically accurate 3D printed parts.

ford focus hatchback

hey guys havn't been on here in a while, just moved from oregon down here to florida. Well am going to school for animation in a couple months so i've been crackin down on some stuff i've never done.. this is my first car and am lookin for some c&c on it. Only have a side front and rear referance so I had to guess for the top view. It's a 200-2004 ford focus with a mix of the wrc version and zx3 version. The hatch area still needs to be smoothed out and tail lights need to be put in. Also I have a question, is it possible to stitch subd's together or must I convert back to poly, combine and merge verts then convert back to sub d?

To me the wheels look a bit too small for the car, especially if its a rally/sports car. I think you might need ot harden some of the edges as focuses are more angular.

I'd keep it in polys rarther than sub d's

thanks for the advice user added image I rushed ahead of myself and got to excited and kinda messed it up, I decided to restart and have proper referances. I found a top view and also spent about 15 mins in photoshop setting them up instead of trying to make them "close enough" in maya. It's come a long way since this last attempt. will have a quick render soon.

I think it's default lighting, don't notice it when i'm editing. am filling the gaps now, finished duplicating from the low rez version, adding some detail now.

Dont know ifyou know but try to keep everything as quads, looks like the sub d version may have had a few tri's in there before conversion

hmm now im at a standstill, I have tried converting all to sub d, creasing edges and verticies but then my model is still in segmants and I havn't found tutorials on how to piece them together. I also tried all polys and joining verts but this way takes forever and my creases don't stay the same, any suggestions?

well i've got with the program and have totally changed the way i'm doing this, using more of the split polygon and have more of an understanding of the smoothing of it now. Also I'll keep in only polys as subd's just wasn't for me. C&C please

nearing completion. need som C&C plz, thinking about narrowing the front fenders as when I tried to make them more "aggresive" I think I went a little overboard.

Hey there spunky,

It's looks really good for a first attempt, but I have to say that it's looking a bit doughy/soft. I'm not really sure that I can offer any advice on how to make it look more solid other than perhaps going back to your low poly model and trying out sub-d's again. I know that they are not everyone's cup of tea but they work for me (with certain things!!).

Take it easy and good luck,

Mat
