Introduction to Maya - Rendering in Arnold
This course will look at the fundamentals of rendering in Arnold. We'll go through the different light types available, cameras, shaders, Arnold's render settings and finally how to split an image into render passes (AOV's), before we then reassemble it i

@G-man: Yeah, the head does look pretty big, but that's what I'm aiming for. Plus you have to remember about 20% of the mass of a Buffalo's head is fur. But I will take your advice, I'll see what it looks like with armour and change the size if need be.

Cheers!

@Steve: Yeah, I was thinking about using the topology tools to create his armour, but the workflow would mean I would end up retopoing the armour pieces. So I thought it might be a bit easier to just model them once in Maya.

But I'll have a tinker with it... see what happens.

Thanks!

Well.... off to start his armour!

Ok, I've done some work on the armour, but I thought I would stop now and post a quick shot. Just want some feedback... make sure this is looking ok... I wasn't really liking where it was heading, so before I wen't any further, just need to know if a re-design of the armour is needed.

Most of the objects are just place holders.

Thoughts?

Hi Steve
To me it looks like two differant types of armour the one on the shoulder and thigh then you have the one on the chest and stomach that looks modern..............dave

I feel like the shoulder pieces are just sort of falling off, I know they're prelim stand-ins, but the mechanics of it don't seem right.

I like the lower armour, and I'm not really pos or neg on the chest stuff.

Just like mine - not feeling the armer. Not sure what it is but both yours and mine look 10 times better without them. Maybe we have been working too hard.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Yeah, i'm gonna go at it from a completely different angle i think. I'm going to start hunting around for some new refs and a bit of inspiration for his armour.

I think i will go for some ZB armour this time... Would give me the opportunity of doing some really intricate designs, or patterns should that be something I decide on.

Thanks again for all the input! user added image

The hands and arms look alittle off to me, they don't match the character. He should have maybe 3 fingers, and the arms should be bigger (not more muscles, but scaled up a lot). The arms look short too
Just my 2cents

Cheers. Yeah I've not put much work into the arms, I was going to wait until I have the body armour done.

I will try scaling them up, see what it looks like, but i think i will need to add some more muscle mass, so they don't look too lanky. I also want them to be somewhat human in looks (five fingers). But again, I'll have a play... might work out... some nice knobbly knuckles.

Thanks for the feedback septopus!

Here's where I'm getting some new ideas for armour:

Anyway, sorry for not updating today, but I was at my Dad's uncle's Diamond anniversary party.

Well, finally got in a couple of hours for some more sculpting, took Vlad's crits and went with the 3 fingers.

Other than the new hands, I've played a bit with the anatomy, I've also added some detail to the head, not much, but enough to get a feel for the shapes. It's all going to be sculpted over with fur.... so not too worried about it.

Here's the new hands... Looking at them now, I think I need to make the small finger a bit bigger.

And the base mesh with the new hands...

I will probably start the armour tomorrow... see if I can get some momentum going with that.

Thanks Dave!

Quick armour test. Just a couple of pieces as a test. Went at this at a completely different angle... just seeing how it feels. As you can tell the sculpting is very rough 'n' ready.

Son of a B*$%^

I had the same idea for the armer but for the shoulder and chest parts. poop.

All well at least yours looks cool. One thing I will say is that I think they go down just a little too far and it would hurt his knees a little - most armer has the knees protect from the lower part or a separated piece, but very nice work god dame it.
