LOL they really went for the jugular here:

Does it require an annoying 10 digit license key?

Does it have a huge intrusive watermark?

A little quote from IRC today...

[16:06] <kbrown> btw, when i saw that head to head i started wondering is softimage in some sort of trouble...
[16:06] <kbrown> loosing customers or something...
[16:07] <NitroLiq> Well, they have to stay competetive and maya really underscored the competition by releasing ple for free

Maybe they will cause AW to increase the features in their PLE and decrease the watermark...?

A little competition is always good for the consumer.

the best free version of software i have seen is the Houdini Apprentice Edition.

It is the same as the top-of-the-range version (£12,000) but has a couple of limitations. There are watermarks in the viewports and final renders. However they are small and placed in the bottom right of the screen, u don't really notice them.

It also has a render size limit of 640x480, small but big enough to get a demo reel made up with (that is what these free ones should be for anyway). again the watermark is placed in the bottom right corner out of the way of the final image.

this part is the cunning part

if you move on the commercial versin, u can still open the files u created in the Apprentice Edition. However this reverts the commercial version back to a non-commercial version. and vice-versa.

Sidefx do offer a service which converts files from the apprentice edition over to the commercial edition.

apart from that it is the same as the £12,000 version.

no obtrusive watermarks a-la A|W

so my hat goes off to Side-FX

So basically you render something a little larger in height than required, then chop the unwanted bottom bit in photoshop user added image
