Complex UV Layout in Maya
Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

Hi Rendervose,

I'm not very much into caustics, so I'll leave the C&C´s for the guys who do.

In any case, wanted to welcome you to SimplyMaya.

I don't even know what caustics is yet heh, but that looks great man! It does seem like they are a little to bright, er ambient? I mean it looks like the ambient color slider is on just a little, although i'm sure that's not the problem. Look at the upper left where the Red meets the grey. Might be the neon tho heh. Thats all I can see, and i may be blind the doctors are doing tests (jk). Looks real nice.

thanx vectorman,
i just made one spotlight and a plane behind the spotlight set it's lambert shader incandescence to 1 to have that kind of effect like the ambient light and it's color to black.

Well i think the ambient value is too high, although if you wanted them to look neon its pretty close to that. But it doesn't look like a REGULAR plastic or glass color, way too ambient in comparison to the dark room. Maybe if you threw some (low intensity) non decaying lights that only affected the plane and the walls then the colors wouldn't seem so glowing.

Still very good I must investigate this "Caustic" thing

Goto Relationship editors (in the Window Menu) And goto Light Linking (light centrick) and click on you're new light. Now make sure the only things highlighted (i think the highlighting is actually grey so don't get confused, they should all be highlighted right now) are the walls, and floor. This is the effect i was trying to explain. Sorry about making you render again. My point was that the neon seemed a little to bright, and that throwing some light on JUST the grey, might make it seem a little less drastic (not to mention it seems to have a little more depth like that)

You might also acheive the same affect by deleting the new light, and uping the intensity of the original, while bringin back the intensity of the indacescense.

Please note: this edit should be somewhat subtle, were are going for FINE tuning as I understood....
