Introduction to Maya - Modeling Fundamentals Vol 1
This course will look at the fundamentals of modeling in Maya with an emphasis on creating good topology. We'll look at what makes a good model in Maya and why objects are modeled in the way they are.

merge edge tool nightmares...

basically this is a sanity plea.

I can't seem to get my head around this tool.
It doesn't seem to behave as I'd expect.

Does anyone have either a clear explaination
on how/what this tool's function actually is..?

Do the edges have to exist on the same
poly object?
Is this suppose to act as a weld?
How "close" do the edges have to be?
Is this to be (always?) to be used with
"poly->combine" ?

TIA -TH

Post up a picture bud...then i can see if i can show you a easier way.

You can try using mirror geomerty option or just merge the vertises 1 by one..

I dont use the merge edge tool.

thanks Kurt but, this is just a general usage question, nothing specific.

But, if you don't mind, could you briefly tell
me how you would 'sculpt' a poly model?
I am looking at one method that pretty much
just extrudes and merges edges of simple
poly planes to build characters.

Might you have ideas / suggestions regarding
this ?

Much thanks,

TH

Target Weld

You could also try to Target Weld tool. It's a MEL script.

From the author's site:
targetWeld
emulates the behaviour of the 3dsMax tool - snap selected vertex to location of a second vert, and weld/merge them.

About your question,
Maybe you can better use Edit Polygons>Merge Multiple Edges IMO.

Yes, the poly's must be combined in order Merge Edge Tool to work. It works like this: select the Tool, then select the first edge, then the second, click again on the edges or enter and the edges are merged.
