Topology symmetry got messed up somehow?

I currently am working on the head of a character in smooth mode. I have symmetry on, a edge selected and symmetry is looks good correctly in non-smooth mode)....(2 edges on the left/right side of the face match), but when I hit 3 for smooth mode different edges are selected? I tried to reset my tools. Turn symmetry on and off. Tried deleting half my face and duplicating special to create a full face and turning symmetry on again but am receiving the same problem? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help.
