skinning models

hey , i would like to know how to skin models made in maya, do i have to make skinmaps first? yes: how? user added image
no: then what do i have to do to start skinning my models.

1) Map your object with UVs.
2) Lay the UVs out in the UV Texture Editor.
3) Take a UV Snapshot.
4) Use this snapshot as a guide for making a texture in Photoshop or whatever.
5) Apply your texture.
