tail

What is the best skeleton that is suitable to animate a tail in maya.
I have tried spacing the skeleton joints some distance away but i could not get the actual movement of the tail or in other words i was not able to get the fluent movement of tail

Try selecting all of the tail joints and rotating them all together at the same time. I use this method for animating tails and tentacles and such.
