selecting vertex

hey guys i have a question if you can bare with me. what it is, say i have 3 vertices selected and i want to select more vertices but my selection box includes the 3 vertices already selected, so when i complete the action the 3 original vertices are deselected. is there a hotkey or anything to select vertices while keeping the original vertices selected.??.

the more I Think I know about Maya the less I seem to know about it.

press shift and select other vertex you want and they will get added to your selection, but if while pressing shift you go over the ones that are already selected they will get deselected.

also, by pressing ctrl+shift and clicking, it doesn't matter if you go over the ones that are already selected they won't get deselected.
