Inserting image planes

When I insert 2 image/reference planes into Maya ( Front view and side for example) they overlap at the origin (form a cross from a top view) should I begin to model from this instance or should I move the position of the image plane?

Looking at my PLE books, the planes do not overlap like my current circumstances but I cannot see how to move them in such a way that I can model over them and keep them in-line.

Or am I completely off track.

Please let me know where I am going wrong. As when I model now occasionally I accidently select the image plane and edit that without realising until later on.

Apologies for the long post

Mike

Move them away from the camera in any view EXCEPT the perspective view.

Cheers, so move them both uniformly in the x and z axis?
