"Professional" learning

Unfortunately there are no colleges or Universities around my area where I live that offer courses in using Maya. So I was going to undertake the task myself of learning from home and teaching myself with the aid of video learning. So instead of using the money that I was going to use to pay for the course, I can use it to buy points from this site and some other stuff. The other stuff I was looking at in particular was the Gnomon video training.

Just really looking for an opinion if anyone can help me out, although I will be buying some points from this site to get the more advanced video tutorials and the organic modelling DVD when it arrives, I was going to get the Gnomon stuff too (or parts of it which I can afford). I was wondering if anyone can recommend the Gnomon video learning material as good sources of learning. I see they are quite long and sound pretty in depth, so hoping that they really are just like learning from a college user added image

Can anyone recommend the Gnomon video learning? I already know about the excellent video material at this site, are there any others that people can suggest for video learning?

(I kinda don't want the fact that I can't learn this stuff locally at colleges and universities to put me off what I want to do so hoping that video learning can prove just as good - or close user added image )

some of them are ok, I suppose, but they're really not geared toward the beginner.

I might be biased but I dont like the gnomon vids at all, the quality is also poor. But thats just me.

I would much prefer mikes and kurts vids any day

A large majority of their videos are 3.0 to 4.0 they haven’t come out with any new videos for a while, but their facility is nice and big, but you would have to live in California to go, unless you got frequent flyer miles. user added image

I contacted Gnomon about they're DVDs and if they are for versions 3.0-4.0 and they said they update as necessary, so they said there dvds are for 4.5 and 5.0

Also as for quality, it is because of the maya screen resolution has to be brought down so that is why it seems soft, DVD's don't put out as high a resolution

I toured the school and was impressed. You cannot beat the location for connections but the price of living sucks.

i've seen a couple of the videos, and while they are nice and generally pretty helpful, the price tag (which is more or less out of my range) doesn't quite justify them to me. i have learned a lot more from reading multiple tutorials and checking out what people have to say when others are asking questinos that you think you might ask someday than i would from buying one video tutorial.

as far as them being out of date, i guess the software is out of date (although a far amount of people still use maya 4 don't they?) but the techniques are generally the same. there are plugins to make some of the processes faster/smoother, but (as always) it's better to learn the basics and understand them before you jump into shortcuts....

The problem with self teaching, is that you dont any kind of certification.

But if you can make a really impressive Demo Reel from self teaching yourself I don't think most companys care if you are certified, as long as you have the talent your in.
